A Decade of FOSS

Looking back, looking forward

With FOSSK4, Kerala is celebrating the tenth anniversary of its initial FOSS Conference in 2001, when the concepts, philosophies and vision of Free Software was first introduced to Kerala and India. During these ten years, Kerala has made significant progress in the use of FOSS for a multitude of purposes, especially in areas such as e-Governance and Education. Kerala also leads the rest of the world in the Government adoption of FOSS (see Wikipedia article here).

The FOSSK4 Conference is scheduled for 27-29 December 2011, at Technopark, Trivandrum, India. The Conference will examine the growth and dissemination of FOSS in Kerala and India in the first decade, the factors that encouraged or hindered its growth, and ways of propagation of FOSS in all domains.

In particular, the Conference will discuss around the theme "The Next Decade: Achieving the Potential of FOSS for Communities, Enterprises and Governments", and suggest strategies for its achievement.

The Conference is organized by ICFOSS, an autonomous institution of the Government of Kerala. The event is supported by Software Freedom Law Centre, Delhi; IEEE Kerala Section and Trivandrum Chapter & the Special Interest Group on FOSS (SIG-FOSS) of the Computer Society of India.
